Library Management on Koha
Library automation on Koha that replaces manual records with an online catalogue and alerts.
A library is where many students first meet an institution's systems. If the catalogue is on index cards, that is what they learn about the institution.
The situation
The library managed its records by hand. Material was not preserved on a digital scale. Staff were tied up in routine processing, the technology was unstable and it was difficult to track the items owned, the bills raised and other key information.
What we built
A cloud-based library system on Koha, configured with a dual database design that uses the strengths of the two major industry-standard bibliographic standards. It scales to heavy transaction loads on any library and is available at any time from any place.
Automated alerts handle overdue items and new arrivals, which removes a category of manual work that staff dislike and patrons tolerate poorly.
What changed
Library staff and users get to information easily. Processing time per item falls. Online monitoring reduces the line-management effort required to supervise routine tasks, and staff time returns to the work that needs people.
